Uppity White Folks Meet In Downtown Huntsville

Uppity white folks from the usually violent alt left held a rally in downtown Huntsville today advising that the confederate sentry on the square, obscured by a massive magnolia tree, be taken down.

There were at least two colored folks, one with a camera who appeared to be having breathing problems, and another who stridently carried the US flag across the front of the meeting.

During the event, the three alt right counter protesters assembled across the street at different times. The first one hollered at the fascist alt left calling them "fascist." Two other wrapped confederate flags around their shoulders like drying off at the swimming pool. One had to be escorted back to his side of the street by Huntsville police. It did not appear any arrests were made, but there was one tense moment when a vehicle drove by with the lone driver flying a cemetery sized confederate flag out the window.

I shook hands with Lee Roop who was on hand interviewing for his news organization.

Earlier Today there were at least three to five hundred people in a line at Star Market in Five Points, to buy solar eclipse glasses, that wrapped all the way around the restaurant that used to be Zestos, passed the laundry, and went back out to Andrew Jackson. (I think the street is still named that.) The line had subsided by noon, but I don't know if they sold out of the 10,000 pairs they were said to have available.

Live On The Scene

This was the scene this morning near the intersection of Francis and Philpot. A bystander told me that the house was vacant. That seemed to be the case and therefore there were apparently no injuries. Two firefighters did, however, appear to be briefly overcome by the heat and received some attention on the scene.

Fresh, Clean And Cool On A Hot Summer Day

Here's a refreshing photo from a snowy day gone by. Originally I prepared this shot as one of many for the Building Walls And Fences Slide Show. After combing through several good options, I had to choose the ones that now appear on the site. All the better, because now this one stands on it's own. Groundhog Tunnel Dugout

This was the scene in my backyard on Sunday. On Monday, President Trump announced the first new coal mine opening, in Pennsylvania, of his tenure.

The ground hog did not open a new tunnel, but rather dug out an old one, clearing the way for renewed use.

How much that ground hog knows about Trump's announcement, I don't know. I do know this, I have seen russian ground hogs in the area...

Snake In The Grass!

Add this green snake to the collection of critters at my bungalow on the backwaters of the Tennessee river. Although I generally get a hognose about once a year, and the occasional two legged variety, this is the first green snake.

As an update. This year I have a new groundhog, and now know they start off much smaller than the "pups" in the slideshow, as the new kid is about the size of a cat. And, the small bird that built her condo in my coffee can came back and nested in the same set of shelves on my patio. This time, I evicted her before she layed any eggs. Nature is amazing.

Welcome To The Machine

If you happen to be riding your horse around Huntsville, you can still find a hitching post.

El Palacio Closes

Pictured is one of twin hombres standing to greet customers for the last 50 years.

El Palacio, the Mexican restaraunt perhaps best known for the best queso cheese dip in town closed it's doors last Friday for the last time.

A Huntsville icon, the restaurant harkens back to a by-gone era when there was no roller coaster running down the center of town - or fast food drive thrus of any kind. Both of which apparantly contributed to it's final demise.

Apparent Microburst Smacks Five Points

This is the scene repeated dozens of times in the Five Points Community today, especially in the area concentrated just south of Oakwood Ave. It seems worthy to note the large number of larger limbs from healthy trees along with the more usual debris blown from strong storms.

In this area, the pattern doesn't seem consistent with straight line winds leading me to wonder if an f1 tornado actually passed without actually touching down, or perhaps a particularly large microburst.

Residents were seen milling about earlier today surveying the damage and moving limbs to the curb. Many had a look of chagrin on their faces no doubt reminded of the tornado in 2010 that did touch down causing structural damage to many homes from Olde Town to the area pictured here.

While I did not see any structural damage from last evenings storm, siding was blown off one home, and at least one roof turbine was seen sitting on the ground.

Tree Dog

If it looks like this dog has climbed up in this tree - he has! I pass by frequently and he always climbs up about six feet to bark hello.
